Power Week Statistics

A HGS-HIRe Power Week on statistics and statistical methods will be held in Herborn in December 2011. The approach of the power week will be broad to be useful for students from all fields in HGS-HIRe, especially for those who work in experimental fields. During the week HGS-HIRe doctoral students will learn about statistics, neural networks and machine learning. The lecturer Helge Voss from CERN / MPI Heidelberg will offer projects which participants can apply in their daily work.

The second HGS-HIRe Lecture Week in the scientific field "Atomic Physics" will be held at Kloster Marienburg at the Mosel river in November 2011.
The week will be dedicated to precision experiments with stored highly charged ions. Stimulated by the location, a former abbey on top of a vineyard at the Mosel river, Yuri Litvinov and Danyal Winters (both from GSI) will give a broad overview of the experimental issues while Andrey Surzhykov from the University of Heidelberg will address the theoretical aspects of this research topic. HGS-HIRe is breaking new ground and has developed, together with experienced trainers from the UK, an integrated series of three softskill courses focusing on various transferable skills, combining different aspects of professional, personal development. Particle Physics Masterclasses

HGS-HIRe is joining the "Netzwerk Teilchenphysik" offering Masterclasses for young adults, 15-19 years old. HGS-HIRe participants are visiting schools or invite high school students to come to the university for a day in order to unravel the mysteries of particle physics. Lectures from active scientists give insight in topics and methods of basic research at the fundaments of matter and forces, enabling the students to perform measurements on real data from particle physics experiments themselves. In contrast to a lecture week it is not interdisciplinary and therefore allows discussions on a much deeper level.
