HGS-HIRe Basic Course I: Making an Impact as an Effective Researcher (B1 residential face-to-face)
The first course in the HGS-HIRe series of transferable skills training will focus on building the core skills
required to make a strong personal impact in the work place and to be able to contribute effectively when working
in teams. This beginners course will help raise awareness about individual preferences and their impact of others.
It will explore how an individual can use their strengths to most effect, whether they are presenting to an audience
of academics or working in a cross disciplinary research team. Participants will also have the opportunity to work
in a number of teams and gain feedback on their impact and performance.
For registration or in case of confirmation of an earlier pre-registration for this course, please send a brief email to info[at]hgs-hire.de as soon as possible.
Please note: This training event is planned as a residential face-to-face course!

Venue
The seminar will be at
Heimvolkshochschule Mariaspring ,
Rauschenwasser 78, 37120 Bovenden, about 10 km north of Göttingen in Lower Saxony.
Travel (updated)
Please note, HGS-HIRe can not offer a bus service to and from Bovenden/Mariaspring.
Therefore, please arrange your travel to/from the venue individually by public transport (train & bus) or by car pool.
Please make sure to arrive well in time.
In order to travel to the venue by public transport, the most common train destination is Göttingen. There, in Göttingen,
is a public bus connection to the venue. Just take the bus line 185 in the direction "Spanbeck" to "Eddigehausen Mariaspring".
However, please note the following important update regarding the bus from Göttingen to Mariaspring:
The central bus terminal in Göttingen including Bussteig/Platform C, where the bus to Mariaspring originally departed, is closed due construction works.
The alternative bus stop for the route to Mariaspring is called "Hirtenbrunnen" and is located about 300 meters from the main entrance of the main train station
on the other side of the road (see side map here).
Furthermore, keep up to date with traffic reports for the bus routes listed here.
The distance from the bus stop of the destination "Eddigehausen Mariaspring" to the venue is about 200 m.
More details are given on the website of the venue.
In case you plan to travel by car pool, best check the recommendations on the mentioned
website, too.
Accomodation
Accomodation is mostly in twin bed rooms. Wishes for room sharing, and dietary needs should be mentioned in the registration e-mail.
Single rooms will be assigned on request subject to availability, additional costs have to be paid by the participant directly at
the reception desk of the venue.
Food
Special food requirements (others than vegetarian) should be communicated to the coordinator in advance.
Vegetarian food is available for every meal. Full board is included in the seminar.
What to bring
Clothing:
The seminar will be very informal, so only casual attire necessary.
Some of the activities will be run outside in the grounds. Your fitness will not be tested,
but your 'weather-ability' might! So please come prepared to work outside. For this reason,
suitable footwear is also essential. You must bring waterproofs with you, as outdoor activities
will not be cancelled due to rain. In the case of extreme weather conditions, we will modify or
provide alternative exercises which can take place indoors.
Linen/towel:
All rooms have linen and towels, no need to bring them. Shower gel, shampoo and hair dryers are
not provided.
Internet
Wireless internet access is available.
Expenses
For HGS-HIRe members, all basic course expenses including accommodation and travel costs are covered by HGS-HIRe.
You only have to pay for additional local expenses (drinks, etc.). All meals are included.
To our knowledge, corresponding arrangements have been made for participants of other Helmholtz Graduate & Research Schools, too.

Though this trip will not generate any costs for your supervisor or group, please do not forget
