HGS-HIRe Basic Course I: Making an Impact as an Effective Researcher (face-to-face)
The first course in the HGS-HIRe series of transferable skills training will focus on building the core skills
required to make a strong personal impact in the work place and to be able to contribute effectively when working
in teams. The course will help raise awareness about individual preferences and their impact of others. It will
explore how an individual can use their strengths to most effect, whether they are presenting to an audience of
academics or working in a cross disciplinary research team. Participants will also have the opportunity to work
in a number of teams and gain feedback on their impact and performance.
For registration please send a brief email to info[at]hgs-hire.de as soon as possible.
Please note: This training event is planned as a residential face-to-face course! In case the current Covid-19
pandemic situation will unfavorable change, this training event will be transferred to an online course via Zoom
on short notice.

Practical Information
Begin/End
This residential seminar is planned to start on Monday, July 4, at 17:00 with an introduction session followed by common dinner,
and ends on Thursday, July 7, in the late afternoon (around 16:00). Please plan to arrive well in advance if you travel individually.
More detailed joining information including a detailed schedule etc. will be forwarded to registered participants as soon as the
trainers provide this information, i.e. usually 1-2 week(s) before the course starts.
Late arrivals
If you need to arrive late please contact the coordinator in advance.
Venue
The seminar will be at
Castle Buchenau ,
Hermann-Lietz-Str. 13, 36132 Buchenau (Eiterfeld), in the north of Hesse.
Travel
We have organized a chartered bus from Frankfurt to Buchenau and vice versa (round trip). Details including the schedule and
departure point can be found
here.
Please note that in order to travel to the castle by public transport, the most common train destination is Bad Hersfeld.
However, for example Hünfeld would also be an option. From Bad Hersfeld, the best way to continue your travel will
most probably be by taxi, which should be around 22 Euro per car. A company that has been used in the past to pre-book cars
was "Fahrservice Wittner" (phone 06672/918918).
In case you plan to travel by car, best check the recommendations on the
website of the castle .
Accomodation
Accomodation is mostly in twin bed rooms. Wishes for room sharing, and dietary needs should be mentioned in the registration e-mail.
Single rooms will be assigned on request subject to availability, additional costs have to be paid by the participant directly at
the reception desk of the venue.
Food
Special food requirements (vegetarian, other) should be communicated to the coordinators in advance.
Vegetarian food is available for every meal. Full board is included in the seminar.
What to bring
Clothing:
The seminar will be very informal, so only casual attire necessary.
Some of the activities will be run outside in the grounds. Your fitness will not be tested,
but your 'weather-ability' might! So please come prepared to work outside. For this reason,
suitable footwear is also essential. You must bring waterproofs with you, as outdoor activities
will not be cancelled due to rain. In the case of extreme weather conditions, we will modify or
provide alternative exercises which can take place indoors.
Linen/towel:
All rooms have linen and towels, no need to bring them. Shower gel, shampoo and hair dryers are
not provided.
Internet
Wireless internet access is available.
Expenses
For HGS-HIRe members, all basic course expenses including accommodation and travel costs are covered by HGS-HIRe.
You only have to pay for additional local expenses (drinks, etc.). All meals are included.
To our knowledge, corresponding arrangements have been made for participants of other Helmholtz Graduate & Research Schools, too.
Insurance
Though this trip will not generate any costs for your supervisor or group, please do not forget
to file a (business) trip request so you are covered by insurance during the soft skills course. Please ask
the secretary of your official supervisor at the university or research center for the appropriate form.
