Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research

The Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research "HGS-HIRe for FAIR" is a joint endeavor of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, the universities at Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Giessen, Heidelberg and Mainz together with FIAS to promote and support structured PhD education for research associated with GSI and FAIR.

The 7th Joint HGS-HIRe and RS-APS Lecture Week on Atomic and Laser/Plasma Physics, that took place in Hardehausen on September 23-27, has been dedicated to imaging techniques from the optical to the X-ray regime. Stimulated by the picturesque location, a former abbey, the lecturers Christian Eggeling (FSU Jena), Silvio Fuchs (HI Jena), Tatiana Latychevskaia (Paul Scherrer Institut) and Gerd Schneider (HZ Berlin) gave a broad and informative overview of this topic. Presentations by the participating students on their research projects complemented this scientific training event. Power Week Statistics

A HGS-HIRe Power Week on statistics and statistical methods will be held in Herborn in December 2011. The approach of the power week will be broad to be useful for students from all fields in HGS-HIRe, especially for those who work in experimental fields. During the week HGS-HIRe doctoral students will learn about statistics, neural networks and machine learning. The lecturer Helge Voss from CERN / MPI Heidelberg will offer projects which participants can apply in their daily work.

Particle Physics Masterclasses

HGS-HIRe is joining the "Netzwerk Teilchenphysik" offering Masterclasses for young adults, 15-19 years old. HGS-HIRe participants are visiting schools or invite high school students to come to the university for a day in order to unravel the mysteries of particle physics. Lectures from active scientists give insight in topics and methods of basic research at the fundaments of matter and forces, enabling the students to perform measurements on real data from particle physics experiments themselves.
