Block Lecture 1 - 2009

QCD and Heavy-Ion Collisions

Prof. Xin-Nian Wang (LBNL)

The first HGS-HIRe Block Lecture is held in cooperation with the 'Extreme Matter Insitute EMMI' in March 2009 at Campus Riedberg.

Abstract:
After a general introduction to symmetries in QCD and their connection to phase transition and QGP, these lectures will focus on the basics of pQCD: perturbative expansion, collinear factorization, parton distribution functions, fragmentation functions, DGLAP evolutions. The discussions will turn to multiple parton scattering, parton propagation, energy loss and modified fragmentation function within pQCD. A brief review of phenomenology on jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions will be given at the end. These lectures are for graduate students who have some basic knowledge of field theory and heavy-ion collisions.
